Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah is an American rapper actress and singer. The work of Queen Latifah in television, film and in music has earned many prizes. These include a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy Nominations An Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her parents divorced around the age of 10. Latifah went to Catholic School in Newark, NJ and was educated through the Baptist Church. The stage name Latifah is a reference to delicate and kind in Arabic was given by her aunt when she was eight. Always tall, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward for her basketball team in high school. In her high school's play Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started to beatbox for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song, and then signed Latifah in 1988, to drop her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
