Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on the 9th of August, 1963. She was born in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. In Newark, Whitney began singing with the church choir in the early years of her childhood. at the age of 15, she accompanied her mother singing background vocals on Chaka's hit Im Every Woman from 1978. She then went on to perform backing vocals for Jermaine, Lou Rawls, and her mother. She started as a featured vocalist for the New York-based New York Funk band Material.
